Since Year 2000, one of the primary aims of the South-West Scotland Pilot Group
has been the establishment of centres where we can plant, grow and display
delphiniums to fullest effect for the enjoyment of the public and, most of all,
to serve as centres of interest and social meeting places for our members.
These objectives remain the same now that we are The Delphinium Society
Scottish Group.
We have developed an increasingly important
relationship with Mr and Mrs J Findlay and Mr & Mrs M Findlay of Carnell
House, Carnell Estate, Nr Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. We are greatly indebted to them
for their hospitality and we are delighted to be able to support them at their
open days. On 22nd July, 2007, the Open Day was in aid of the National Gardens
Scheme.
We regard our work at Carnell as a partnership in which the
Estate and the Delphinium Society gain mutual benefit from our association.
Initially, we planted up a border in the walled garden with seedlings grown
from Delphinium Society seed and, in the first year, we were able to produce
simultaneous flowering of 64 seedling stocks. Whilst much of our stock is still
drawn from society seed, we are now actively introducing named cultivars with
the eventual aim of producing a national collection of delphiniums for
Scotland.
Last year's Open Day was a great success and we look forward
to seeing as many of our members as is possible this year and in future
years.
If you click on the Carnell link you will be able to see some of
the work which has been taking place in the period 2006 - 2008. Weather
conditions have been, at times, atrocious but the commitment of the team is
first class and of immense credit to the Society in general.
