The international nature of The Delphinium Society is no better exemplified
than by the work of James MacMaster who is the Chairman of our Scottish Group. His work demonstrates just how much
every member means for the Society. Since 1999, in partnership with the
Society's Promotions & Publicity Secretary, his work has given meaning to
the fact that the membership of the Society is important, no matter where it is
to be found in the UK or, for that matter, globally.
Wherever it is
possible to bring together a group of members willing to work for the
advancement of the Society then the Society as a whole will give the fullest
possible support.
Currently
in Scotland, we have the group of members in South-West Scotland who are keen
to work for the Society and, since year 2000, the work at Carnell has received
the Society's support. There is now an annual programme of events and Jimmy
MacMaster is glad to visit local societies to talk about our flower and how
best to grow it. Of particular importance is the work of the group at Carnell
Estate where the planting of seedling delphiniums grown from the Society's seed
strain has been progressing at a remarkable pace. Locally, the seedling border
is acclaimed for the wonderful display it now provides each year. Spurred on by
this success, a border for named Elatum Hybrid cultivars is now being developed
with the eventual aim of it becoming a National Collection for Scotland.
Another aim is the encouragement of Scottish breeders to produce, by means of
their breeding programmes, new named cultivars which have been bred
specifically to take account of Scottish horticultural conditions. In 2006 the
group presented the Second South-West Scotland Show of The Delphinium Society.
This took place on 23rd July at Carnell Estate in conjunction with the Open Day
for the National Gardens Scheme for Scotland. In 2007 the members in Scotland
again met at Carnell, that time on 22nd July, for their annual social event and
the corresponding date in 2008 will be 13th July, 2008 when we look forward to
meeting as many people as possible. This will again be in support of the
National Gardens Scheme for Scotland. However, prior to that date there will be
the Delphinium Society Open days at Carnell which wil be Saturday and Sunday
28th & 29th June 2008. The Society's Open days will be for members
only, and admission will be by means of the membership card. The fourth
annual show will be held on those days and we hope that as many members as
possible will either support the show or come and see the developing delphinium
borders.
If you are the Lectures Programme Secretary for a local
horticultural society and are looking for someone to give a talk about
delphiniums, then please give James MacMaster a ring on 01292 590757.
