Who Are We?

The international nature of The Delphinium Society is no better exemplified
than by the work of James McMaster who is the Chairman of our Scottish Group. His work demonstrates just how much
every member means to the Society. Since 1999, in partnership with the
Society's Promotions & Publicity Secretary, his work has given meaning to
the fact that the membership of the Society is important, no matter where it is
to be found in the UK or, for that matter, globally.
Wherever it is possible to bring together a group of members willing to work for the
advancement of the Society then the Society as a whole will give the fullest
possible support.
The primary work of progressing the interests of the Society in Scotland started in year 2000 and has been developing ever since then. The first initiative was the establishment of a presence at the Ayr Flower Show and shortly thereafter came the agreement with the owners of Carnell Estate, Nr Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. This agreement resulted in the establshment of a delphinium border and members Open Days. Additional to that has been the development of a programme of meetings and talks to local societies.
Starting as an informal South-West Scotland group in 2000, under the chairmanship of James McMaster, the General Committee of the Society formally resolved, in September 1997, to fully incorporate the group as "The Delphinium Society Scottish Group". In September 2008 the Group made an important first appearance at the Dundee Flower & Food Festival and a second one in 2009. The first showstand was set up at the Ayr Flower Show in 2009 and another is being planned for 2010. A new appearance at 'Gardening Scotland', Royal Highland Showground, Ingliston, Edinburgh forms a new part of the show programme for 2010.
The Carnell agreement has been of the greatest importance to the Society in Scotland but, in order to establish a wider influence throughout Scotland, it is necessary to look for other gardens and sites where delphinium growing can be demonstrated to show the full potential of our flower. Of this need there is no doubt if we guage our perceptions by the requests which James McMaster receives for attendances at shows and for talks to local societies. On this contents page you will find direct reference to our aims and objectives in seeking other places where we can exhibit delphiniums.
Of course, all such efforts are dependent on support from horticulturists and gardeners in Scotland and an invitation is extended to you, the visitor to this web-site, to consider becoming a member of the Society for the princely sum of £6 per annum. You become a Member of the Society and thereby a Member of any incorporated Group in the UK. In your case, of course, your main interest is in membership of the Scottish Group. As with all things involving societies, you will get satisfaction in membership in proportion to what you put into your membership in whatever form that may take.
The seedling border at Carnell has been acclaimed locally for the wonderful displays it has provided over recent years but times change and, in the process, new doors will open to extend the Society's influences to other parts of Scotland. That is our aim which we hope will receive the support of growers in Scotland.
If you are the Lectures Programme Secretary for a local
horticultural society and are looking for someone to give a talk about
delphiniums, then please give James McMaster a ring on 01292 590757.
